A Twisted Fantasy with Hemlocke Springs at Hometown Show in Charlotte

With a night of fairytales and eccentric characters, Hemlocke Springs performs a hometown show in Charlotte, NC, at the Underground. Previously opening for the likes of Chapell Roan, Doja Cat, and Conan Gray, Hemlocke Springs knows how to command a crowd. Garnering her popularity through her viral bedroom-pop song “Girlfriend,” which circulated the airwaves and the screens of TikTokers. She followed up her hit with an EP titled going… going… GONE! and then with her highly anticipated debut album, the apple tree under the sea, which hosts her headlining tour.

The show begins with the opening act, The Girl, who is coincidentally Hemlocke in a slightly different costume. Adorned in a black cape and hat, she tells an exaggerated and twisted retelling of a story inspired by Snow White. This storytime was supported by props of printed images on popsicle sticks as she described a story of an evil witch, an apple farm, and a protagonist named Applë. It was a lovely surprise to hear Hemlocke’s narration. Her lighthearted jokes and plot twist fairy tale gave the essence of a stand-up theatrical performance. Nevertheless, this set the perfect scene for the whimsical and one-of-a-kind night ahead. The Girl’s narration ends and leads into the opening number “the red apple”. From quotes of Shakespeare and inspiring sentiments, more pre-recorded narrations played throughout the show, acting transitions between songs, and continuing the storybook motif.

Hemlocke Spring’s fans came for a show full of high energy and melodramatics and were promptly served. The theme of the Charlotte, NC show was Garden of Unearthly Delights. Fans were instructed to dress on theme, and they did not disappoint. A sea of flower crowns, mushroom hats, colorful wigs, and glitter lined the barricade while Hemlocke herself wore an outfit of twisted satin and flowers. Halfway through the show, a fan yells “We love you from Raleigh”, alluding to Hemlocke’s hometown of Raleigh, NC — though she does later clarify that she is technically from Concord, NC. This did not deter local fans’ pride, however, in supporting their hometown act. Hemlocke’s mother was even in attendance that night, making this second-to-last stop on her tour even more special.

Though the apple tree under the sea tour has ended, you can still catch Hemlocke Springs at a festival show this summer or while she is supporting American indie pop band Muna.
