A Glorious Ska-venture with Less Than Jake and Friends

On Sunday, ska legends Less Than Jake made their way to Michigan to perform at Royal Oak Music Theatre for their highly anticipated Summer Circus Tour. Day-of ticket sales surged, leading this show to sell out. This tour boasts an incredible lineup of openers like The Suicide Machines, Fishbone and Bite Me Bambi. Each act brought their unique blend of ska to the stage. None of them lacked energy and made sure that the audience was fully entertained and engaged throughout the night.

Bite Me Bambi, a female-fronted band, started off the evening strong. They surprised the audience with just how dynamic and enthusiastic they were.

Fishbone was the next band up. Even though they’ve been around for the past 46 years, they proved that they still got it. Frontman Angelo Moore was firing on all cylinders. He was magnetic to watch onstage with the band gleefully following his lead.

Detroit’s hometown heroes The Suicide Machines took the stage right after and delivered an unforgettable set. Although this show had three opening bands, not a single person was. There was also a massive heat wave passing through the state and the venue was undeniably warm. There were a few concertgoers who passed out and had to be escorted to safety. Despite this, the audience’s energy never disappeared.

This sold out crowd was overcome with joy once Less Than Jake took the stage. Fans of all ages filled the barricade and sang along to every lyric. The band’s circus themed decorations and toilet paper dispenser that launched rolls into the audience added to the playful atmosphere. The band played crowd-pleasing songs such as “Walking Pipebomb,” “The Science of Selling Yourself Short,” and “Gainsville Rock City.”

With plenty of fun shenanigans, trombones, and a stacked setlist, this tour is a must-see for fans. Less Than Jake proves again and again why they are the quintessential ska punk band.
