Train's Drops of Jupiter Tour Lands in Charlotte

Train stopped in Charlotte at the Truliant Amphitheater celebrating “Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere.” Playing to a packed amphitheater during a southern heat wave with temperatures reaching the high 90’s, it didn’t stop the band or fans from enjoying their summer night in the open air under the stars. Matt Nathanson was the first act on the lineup. Nathanson came out with his guitar in hand and brought his folk rock to the Charlotte crowd who was ready to sing and dance. Playing songs like “Car Crash” and “Suspended” before a couple covers from legends like a Billy Joel cover of “Uptown Girl” and a Prince cover of “Kiss.” Matt ended his set with his biggest hit “Come on Get Higher,” a time capsule of the 2000’s.

Next up, the band known for the Big Bang Theory theme song (of course they played it), Barenaked Ladies. Although lead singer Ed Robertson joked if you didn’t like their music, their name was Third Eye Blind. Massive hits “One Week” and “Pinch Me” were played along with a mash up of “Pink Pony Club” Chappell Roan cover. The band’s banter kept the mood light and fun in the high heat.

Twenty-five years of an iconic album is no small feat, Train did their Drops of Jupiter album justice by playing several songs from the album including opening with “She’s On Fire,” “Whipping Boy,” and “Mississippi” to note a few. Bringing out the opening bands for a couple songs we got a playful rendition of John Mellencamp cover of “Jack and Diane” with Matt Nathanson, and a “Meet Virginia/Country Roads” mash up with The Barenaked Ladies. In the most surprising and heartwarming moment of the night, lead singer of Train, Pat Monahan brought his teenage son (perfectly named) Rock Monahan on stage to perform Journey’s hit “Stone in Love.”

“Angel in Blue Jeans” and “Hey, Soul Sister” kept the momentum going into the night, with lots of confetti and streamers being dispersed into the crowd. Closing with the tour’s name sake and overly catchy “Drops Of Jupiter.” You can catch the tour continuing to the Midwest, and then out west, finishing up on Aug 30th in Auburn, Washington. In addition, Train has a new album coming out August 28th this year called Mad Dog in the Fog.
