Ruby Ibarra Made it in Los Angeles — Literally!

Fresh off her NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest win, Ruby brought her fiery energy and multilingual flow to a sold-out show at The Regent Theater. Backed by a group of insanely talented Filipino musicians (including members of Pinay Voltron, Astralogik, and a special appearance by rock legend June Millington).

Ruby Ibarra is a trailblazing Filipina-American rapper, she reps both her hometown in Tacloban, Philippines, and the Bay Area where she grew up. Widely known for her incredible trilingual raps  in Tagalog, Bisaya, and English, her music is mainly about being raw, honest and giving voice to stories that don’t always get heard, along with blending her Filipino roots and immigrant story into her music.

What really hit me differently was how down-to-earth she was the whole night. Between songs, Ruby talked about her life—growing up Filipino-American, juggling different cultures, challenges of being an immigrant,  and what it means to rep her community in hip-hop. It didn’t feel like just a show, it felt like a conversation, a space where everyone could feel seen and heard. That connection made the whole night hit even deeper.

That was probably why I kinda teared up as soon as she started her set, which felt kinda weird—like, me? Getting all emotional at a hip-hop show? Especially when everyone else was just hyped, happily soaking up all that amazing energy? But nah, those were straight-up tears of joy. It’s one of those moments where you just feel super proud seeing one of your own killin’ it. Ruby wasn’t the only one that won NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest—it felt like a win for ALL of us.

Ruby Ibarra didn’t just show up in Los Angeles—she straight-up owned the night and gave everyone the strength to be themselves and feel even more proud of who they are. This is just the beginning, and I’m so excited to see where she goes from here. Padayon, kababayan!
