Dallas-based artist Novulent brought out the city of L.A. on June 17 to The Roxy on his VOL.3 The Final Album Tour. He’s built his name and image by blending emo, nu-metal, and alternative rock to create music that feels heavy but also emotionally exposed — a sound many are drawn to. With heavy anticipation for Novulent’s performance fans began to show up well before the doors opened. The night opened with several very talented bands including Babyteeth, Cathedral Bells, and Vämp who each added something different to build up to Novulent’s headlining set. Babyteeth brought soft emotional vocals, Cathedral Bells with a dreamlike atmosphere, and Vämp with some darkness and more hardcore energy to prime the crowd.
Novulent’s set started off really dark with the lighting creating a mysterious atmosphere before he began the performance. He opened with his captivating single “Dysphoria,” which instantly pulled the crowd in and set the tone for the rest of the night. From behind the camera, the harsh lighting felt fitting for the genre, cutting through the darkness in quick bursts and giving the show a raw look that matched the sound. As the set continued the energy in the room stayed at its peak. Many people came on stage with him — several fans launched themselves back into the crowd, a mosh pit opened up, and there was crowd surfing throughout the performance.
Novulent moved through the set with a mix of aggression, emotion, and control, keeping the crowd locked in from start to finish. He performed some of his most popular songs, including “Rip” and “Evil Eye,” both of which stood out even as a first-time listener. He also performed songs from his latest album, VOL.3, giving the show a strong connection to the tour while still making the whole night feel spontaneous and alive.
Capturing Novulent’s set and being introduced to new artists in this genre made the night even more memorable for me. I was able to meet some of the supporting bands as well as Novulent, which made it even better to experience the show not just from the crowd, but through my lens while connecting with the talented people behind the music. All of Novulent’s music throughout the night felt captivating and the bands supporting him did a great job building the energy before he took the stage.
With 15 shows left on his North American tour before he heads to Europe for the first time in November, now is the time to check out his upcoming dates and experience the show live yourself. If you’re looking for a night of hard-hitting, emotional rock music with some strong opening bands and a crowd that gives everything back, Novulent’s tour is one worth catching.
