American alt-rock band Modest Mouse brought the heat to Calgary’s Jubilee Auditorium with their summer tour – and there’s no better way to spend a Wednesday night than a rock show.
While a theatre may not be the first place you expect a rock show, that didn’t stop the crowd from bringing the energy. As the group stepped on stage in a shroud of blue light, a loud voice erupted above the cheers, declaring, “I love you Modest Mouse!” From that moment on, audience members were standing in their seats, bobbing their heads, dancing with each other, and waving their arms (and beer cups) around.

The six-piece – currently comprised of vocalist and guitarist Isaac Brock, keyboardist Tom Peloso, bassist Russell Higbee, percussionists Ben Massarella and Damon Cox, and lead guitarist Simon O’Connor – played a vast variety of songs spanning their decades-long career, and every number was a fan favourite. They don’t have one specific setlist this tour, and every stop gets their own unique set to enjoy.

Their groovy, nostalgic rock was set to the perfect backdrop of vivid colours and psychedelic lights. The stage was as bright as their sound, illuminating a passionate fanbase of all ages, young and old alike. “Fire it up!” Brock exclaimed at their drummer when they kicked off that song, and that’s exactly what they did – bring the fire, and turn it up even higher.
