Charlotte Sands brought pop punk to Midtown Manhattan at the Gramercy Theatre last weekend in support of her album Satellite, released this past spring. The Boston-based singer is about halfway through this latest North American tour, and fans made sure to show up in full support of her music.
In a scene often dominated by male artists, Sands gets up on stage with just herself, her iconic blue hair, and her band to put on a truly incredible show. On top of all that, she is an independent artist, and she made sure to emphasize how much fans showing up at her shows truly means to her and her career. “It takes a village to put on this show,” she said during a break in the set, showing how grateful she is for the crew who put their blood sweat and tears into making sure each show is perfect.
She opened the set with “Satellite” and “half alive” off of the new album before playing some older material like “Bad Day” and “pity.” “Afterlife” ended with an outro of Owl City’s “Fireflies.” She then took a moment to talk to the audience about how she plans a show, and how she hates not being able to include everyone’s favorite songs on the setlist. To fix this, she’s created an acoustic segment in the set where she allows two fans to each pick a song from a binder she has on stage of all of her songs. The first choice for tonight was “Every Guy Ever” (which Sands described as a tough one, but said the fan had good taste in her music). The second song chosen was “die in this room” off her debut album can we start over?
The energy at a Charlotte Sands show is really something special. The crowd is into it, there’s crowdsurfers in these small venues, and Sands finds a way to fully command even the smallest stage with her screams and hair flips. After the acoustic set, highlights for the second half of the night included “neckdeep,” “Sunday,” and a medley of her older songs. She wrapped up the set with “HUSH” and “Dress” before thanking the audience for the night.
