Metric Bring All the Feelings of Fun and Friendship to Edmonton

Canadian indie-rock band Metric brought their aptly named “All The Feelings Tour” to Edmonton on a rainy Monday night, celebrating friendship and nostalgia at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. Their current tour follows in the wake of their April album release, Romanticize the Dive, the band’s tenth record. Vocalist Emily Haines described the album as the essence of the band — comprised of Haines, guitarist James Shaw, bassist Joshua Winstead, and drummer Joules Scott-Key — and that essence shines brightly in their live performance.

Metric brought along indie-pop group Stars and indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene to kick off the evening, with the latter band pulling off an heartfelt performance despite having had to continue the tour sans drummer due to an accident (frontman Kevin Drew’s wife seamlessly filled in as their drummer). Metric took the stage shortly after, bringing their magnetic energy to  the stage in a flood of blue and orange lights as they burst into “Victim of Luck,” the opening track of their latest LP.

The band performed an array of new tracks and old favourites, such as “Breathing Underwater” and “Gold Guns Girls.” Haines shared that one of their new songs, “Crush Forever,” symbolized her “passing the torch to the next generation.” The authenticity of Metric’s music garnered an audience that was glued to the band’s energy. Haines often took a moment to share her thoughts with the crowd between songs. “If this was the end of the world, what a beautiful place to be,” she shared with a smile before diving into “All Comes Crashing.” Scott-Key and Winstead provided addicting grooves to every song, with Shaw providing riveting guitar riffs to make every song a dynamic experience.

Stars and Broken Social Scene returned to the stage to join Metric for “Loyal” — a track that soulfully reflects on long-lived friendships. “You can have responsibilities,” Haines shared, “but I still believe in the value of friendship.” The multi-group performance was a highlight of the night, with all three bands extending the love they have for each other to the audience.

Metric’s encore was a vibrant end with their hit songs “Help I’m Alive” and “Black Sheep.” Overall, the night tugged on the heartstrings of everyone in the room in the best way possible.
