Born in Malaysia and now based in Toronto, pop singer Alex Porat brought her crushed! tour to Edmonton on Thursday night, gathering a dedicated crowd at the Starlite Room’s Temple stage for her first ever headline show in the city. The Canadian tour is in support of her most recent EP, crushed! released on June 27th of this year.
Opening the show was Edmonton singer-songwriter Lucette, who performed an assortment of synth backed piano ballads with her velvety voice and storytelling lyrics. She jokingly thanked the crowd for hanging out to hear her “Debbie-downer songs” before Alex Porat took over the stage.
Kicking off her set with “Teardrop,” Alex Porat danced around in a grey hoodie and black boots, illuminated by pink and blue lights and star projections. A backtrack and sole drummer served as her band, allowing her to take full reign of the stage. With it being such an intimate venue, Porat often interacted with her fans in the crowd — little girls who made her friendship bracelets, and young women who sported Porat’s signature look of hair curlers and sunglasses.
Throughout the night, Porat sang her heart out to new songs such as “Disaster” and “Face Like Yours,” while also pulling out deep cuts such as “happy for you” and “dimension,” even performing her popular cover of “Hopelessly Devoted To You” from hit musical Grease. She alternated between showing off her dance moves and playing guitar, remaining steadfast in showing off her charming vocals in every song. Porat often paused between songs to share anecdotes and interactive moments with the crowd, detailing how she writes songs for “sensitive people” and “never thought she’d write happy music.”
While her music keeps growing in popularity, Porat doesn’t fail to stay grounded and connected. She bares her heart in every song she writes and performs authentically — it isn’t hard to fall in love with the Canadian popstar.
