Midwest guitar-and-drum powerhouse duo The Black Keys brought their loud, raw, and electric energy to Forest Hills Stadium on Wednesday, August 13th. In support of the release of their thirteenth studio album this month, No Rain, No Flowers, the proud natives of Akron, Ohio, Dan Auerbach (lead vocals, guitar) and Patrick Carney (drums) definitely brought the rain amid a stormy and thunderous summer night in New York City, but left the crowd eager to hear the very best from their favorite blues-rock duo.

Starting off the evening was Gary Clark Jr., the guitar aficionado known for his unique blend of rock, blues, and soul. The native of Austin, Texas played a short but memorably electric opening set, consisting of “Maktub,” “Ain’t Messin’ ‘Round,” and “When My Train Pulls In.” As inclement weather pulled into the area, the crowd was forced to seek shelter from the rain, but gathered within the venue expressing sheer excitement at seeing The Black Keys perform a mix of songs from their extensive catalogue. After much anticipation through the weather delay, cheers echoed through the cavernous stadium as the rain cleared. Fans were eventually escorted back to their seats, and Dan and Patrick made their long-awaited appearance on stage to greet their eager fans and thank them for their patience and support. After all, no rain, no flowers!

Despite the weather delay and a shortened setlist, the duo kicked off with the titular song from their newest release, and powered through a mix of old and new favorites from their catalogue. Throughout their thirteen song set, including “Gold on the Ceiling,” “Lo/Hi,” “Tighten Up,” and “Howlin’ for You,” both Dan and Patrick brought their passion, soul, and unrelenting energy with every note played. The sheer power of their immersive sound drove cheers from the audience after every song.

The duo wrapped up the evening with two hits from their 2011 release, El Camino. First up was “Little Black Submarines,” known for a softer acoustic kick-off before transitioning into an explosive hard-rock jam. Ending the night with “Lonely Boy” had the crowd singing at the top of their lungs, and reminded us all of why The Black Keys have a reputation of ranking amongst the best live performers in rock music.
