RELEASED VIA CLOVERDALE RECORDS: LISTEN HERE
Entering Evan Honer’s musical space is like returning to the familiar warmth of a cup of tea on a chilly day. His sound embraces everything from the comforting timbre of folksy acoustic guitar to those feel-good indie beats, you know, the ones that make you want to clap along with glee. Most notably, his writing is full of delightfully relatable lyrics that anyone who’s lived through their twenties can connect with. Following the viral success of his cover of Tyler Childers’ “Jersey Giant”, the emotive songwriter is back with his second single of 2025, “Everything I Wanted”.
Overall, the song itself leans toward that laid-back, bubbly feel that any indie/pop-Americana-inspired track should embrace: catchy vocal melodies, a warm guitar presence (or two), and a snappable beat to be contrasted with words that explore themes of love and loss. The lyrics carry us through a story of coping with the less-than-desirable end to a meaningful relationship. Honer sings about feeling stuck in the past, consumed by things that were once very real and how they have now seemed to slip away. Phrases like “chasing something I thought we both felt” and “she was gone with everything I wanted” encourage this narrative forward. The instrumental build throughout the composition is something to strive for, thoughtfully adding more to the melodic landscape as the track time elapses. The elements build together and eventually find themselves in a very full, very warm resolution, including my favorite moment where the harmonic voicings of the lead guitar follow that of the primary vocal melody.
I find my ears tend to gravitate toward the beauty of simplicity in music. Not to say this is the only quality I enjoy, but there is something in the ease of listening to certain songs that brings a smile to my face and hum to my lips. This song does just that by creating a symbiotic blend of familiar sounds and thought-pricking lyrical themes, making me eager to listen!
