One OK Rock Shakes Up LA’s Greek Theatre with Contagious Energy

J-rock sensations ONE OK ROCK brought their electrifying Detox Tour to a sold-out crowd at Los Angeles’ iconic Greek Theatre earlier this week.

Formed in Tokyo in 2005, the band is comprised of vocalist Taka Moriuchi, guitarist Toru Yamashita, bassist Ryota Kohama, and drummer Tomoya Kanki. Their eleventh studio album, Detox, was released earlier this year. The guys have been out on the road playing tracks from both Detox and prior albums.

As the sun fell behind the east side of the Hollywood Hills, ONE OK ROCK took the stage to a roaring array of fans. The tour production was nothing short of impressive — with strong front lighting, complimentary multicolor back lighting and an expansive LED with everchanging visuals, The Greek Theatre felt transformed into a vibrant neo-rock haven. A soft haze wrapped up the ambient atmosphere, ensuring that every seat in the house had a superb view and experience.

ONE OK ROCK’s chemistry was obvious — they’ve been a band for 20 years and it shows. Taka’s dynamic presence as frontman was immediately felt as the band launched into “Puppets Can’t Control You” as their first song. Engaging the audience with strong vocals and an infectious aura, Taka emitted a feel-good energy that would make a complete stranger light up during this show. The band’s instrumental performance was seamless — though not surprising, as the times I’ve seen ONE OK ROCK in the past were equally as on point as this night. Ryota, Toru and Tomo naturally flowed with Taka as he bounced across the stage, waving to the crowd in all corners of the venue. Fans from front to back were on the edge of their seat (standing, actually), erupting with cheer and screams of dedication after each song.

Taka’s vocals soared as Tomo punched out perfect percussion — Ryota anchored their performance with melty basslines while Toru carried the song riff after riff. Half of the setlist consisted of new tracks from Detox along with other fan favorites spread across six of their past albums. Some personal highlights for me were: “The Beginning,” “Let Me Let You Go,” “C.U.R.I.O.S.I.T.Y.,” and “Save Yourself.” Additionally, I enjoyed hearing “Tropical Getaway” and “The Pilot </3” from Detox live for the first time.

ONE OK ROCK closed out the show with a trifecta of bangers: “+Matter,” “Decision,” and “We Are” — In the end, it is more than just the songs or the production — it’s the charisma and radiance that the band continually exudes each and every time they play a show that makes them such a special band to witness live and have the pleasure of calling oneself a fan. The Detox Tour will continue through early June as the band heads to the east coast for a final wrap. Check out tour dates here!
