On Wednesdays We Wear Pink for Scene Queen in Eindhoven

On Wednesdays, we wear pink, fitting for a practically sold out Scene Queen concert in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The American ‘bimbocore’ artist had toured with PVRIS through Europe a year ago, but finally got to headline her own Hot Shows In Your Area tour, named after her debut record Hot Singles In Your Area from 2024.

Lake Malice (Christine Mooijer)

The show starts with supporting band Lake Malice from the UK. Vocalist Alice Guala is an absolute powerhouse, going from the most angelic singing to absolutely feral screams with ease, and Guitarist Blake Cornwall moves around the stage like a hurricane. With all the effort they put into their performance, it’s hard for the crowd to stand still for too long. The band also makes sure to interact with the crowd a lot, with Blake pulling up a drum to the fans in front to drum with. He also makes his way to the floor with his guitar, to continue to play in the middle of the circle pit.

Guala speaks a little about there being a lot of women in the room tonight, both on and off stage (Lake Malice’s drummer is also a woman), and how important it is to them to create a safe space for women to enjoy music in, something that would’ve been very different only a few years ago.

Scene Queen (Christine Mooijer)

The feminist and inclusive message is obviously very important to Hannah Collins (aka Scene Queen) as well. Her music is deliberately hyper-feminine, and with her 5’1” frame she’s pretty much the metalcore equivalent of Sabrina Carpenter. Tonight’s show is just as short ‘n sweet, as the setlist of 14 songs goes by pretty quickly. The new song “Platform Shoes” even goes a little more disco than the songs off her record, without losing any of the bite she has become known for.

Halfway through the set, Scene Queen invited three fans up on stage (bonus points to the venue for their wheelchair lift onto the stage) and initiated us all into her sorority Bimbo Beta Pi, by making the crowd pledge allegiance to her community, which definitely isn’t a friendship cult AT ALL. Our new cult leader Hannah promised us as much, though consensus in the crowd was there are far worse cults one could accidentally join.

Scene Queen (Christine Mooijer)

The sense of community between Hannah and her fans is palpable, through moments like her joking in between songs (“you’re moshing like you have free health care here”) and joining in the ‘twerklepit’ during “Pink Rover.” The music she makes is a reflection of her unabashed feminine strength, with a sprinkle of female rage, and this show seems like a very much needed emotional outlet for the mostly female audience, all going hard at all times during the short set. She gets gifted a Labubu with pink cowboy hat, and the venue staff is dolled up in the pink hats as well. Scene Queen is very far from being a mean girl, unless you had it coming. The sparkly queen has two German shows left on this European tour, before she makes her way down under for a couple of festival dates in Australia. Tickets for these are still available on https://scenequeenrocks.com/pages/tour.
