After playing across the hall in the smaller room not even 5 months ago, on Monday, Omar Rudberg returns to a sold out Max in the Melkweg in Amsterdam. The Venezuelan-Swedish singer and actor is touring through Europe with his Every Night Fantasy Tour, in celebration of his EP release in October as well.

The evening starts off early, with most fans outside queuing for hours to get a good spot in the venue. Omar’s fans have really decided to go all out for this show, and it already proves to be more than a regular concert. Unfortunately for a lot of fans, there’s no merch booth today, but that doesn’t stop them from dressing for the occasion, with a lot of sparkle, sequin and glitter to be found amongst the crowd.

Rudberg didn’t bring a support act with him on this stop, so the crowd choses to watch scenes of Young Royals before it starts. Omar rose up to fame through his leading role in this Netflix series. That being said, diminishing him to just an actor turned singer, would be a gross disservice to his music. He began his music career in 2013, as part of Swedish boyband FO&O and he tried to participate as the Swedish Eurovision participant in multiple years.

The 26-year old is accompanied by two dancers during the upbeat songs, and taking a solo spotlight during the slower songs, having a perfect mix between having us dance and getting some room to breathe every now and then. You can almost pinpoint the difference between his Venezuelan roots and the Swedish influences, where some songs sound like a sensual summer party and the slower songs have a quiet intimacy to them.

“Simon’s Song”, a song that was part of the Young Royals storyline, is placed quite soon in the set, getting a strong emotional response from the audience. It’s a smart choice to play it as early as he did, to get the focus back on the rest of his own and newer repertoire. He also released the song “I’m Not A Boy” right before tour started, which sounds like he’s ready to move into a more mature direction with his music. He’s not the same boy you’ve seen on TV, and the setlist is built in a way to show you how different exactly. He doesn’t want to be confined to certain expectations and the song is a perfect summary of both his music and the show tonight.

The Every Night Fantasy Tour will continue through Europe for the rest of the month, with limited ticket availability at most shows. You can find the next stops and tickets on https://www.omarrudberg.com.
