November 23, 2024: Interpol and their devoted fans celebrated the 20th anniversary of their beloved sophomore album Antics at the Kia Forum. They performed the album in its entirety, marking their success as a band that never lost its beat. An American rock band from New York City, Interpol was Formed in 1997 and has amassed a huge a loyal following — part of which was clearly on display at the Kia Forum. The Antics album was released in September 27th, 2004 and produced iconic tracks like “Evil,” “Slowhands,” and “C’Mere.”
When I had arrived, I almost felt underdressed in comparison: the audience showed up and showed out in their best dress outfits, taking a nod from the band’s debonair on stage attire throughout the years. A stark contrast to other shows from other artists, Interpol always has an air of sophistication behind their music and their showmanship. It bleeds into their fanbase and sets them apart from many artists of their day and today. When the lights went black everyone was immediately transported to an elevated mental state once the first notes of “Next Exit” came on. Listening to a chronological set list of an album that so many love is quite the experience; everyone knows the lyrics, everyone knows what’s coming next.
After the first act the band began to play their hits from other albums and they did not disappoint. Hearing “Rest My Chemistry,” in person is such a raw song when performed live due to the nature the lyrics detail. That did not distract from the fact that Interpol always plays to impress and have never been one for pedestrian performance. The highlight of the evening was watching and listening to the fans as they went home for the evening: all walking to their cars, singing songs together and celebrating this 20 year commemorative event. For a band to have this level of staying power entices the thought of their next anniversary performance; we will be waiting in eager anticipation for future antics.
