Fresh off her supportive run with AJR, mxmtoon brought a stellar headline show to the House of Blues in San Diego, CA on July 13, 2024. Alongside her was singer/songwriter Nep, a 20-year-old who also just dominated her first headlining tour and debut album this year. It was the perfect combo to create an incredibly fun evening of singalongs and stories that resonated with the crowd.
As the lights dimmed, Nep, a Florida based student, stepped out onto the stage with an acoustic guitar and a story to tell. One solo spotlight drew the audience attentive and ready to listen. Her tone was breathtaking, soft and sweet that could appease anyone. Pairing her angelic voice with catchy tunes and totally relatable life stories left a lasting impression. She got the entire room, floor to balcony, to bark (yes, woof) to her song “A Big Brown Dog Named Bagel.” She then taught the crowd how to harmonize with her during “Cotton Tail,” then executed perfectly. It was truly unforgettable! Our vocals were warmed up, and we were ready for mxmtoon.
Maia, or better known as mxmtoon, had an energetic stage entrance like no other. She appeared like a bolt of lighting and immediately started to dance her way through “fever dream.” The 24 year-old Oakland based artist took time between her songs to really connect to her audience. She asked questions and genuinely listened for responses and had comedy in her dialog. She even gave us a peek into the raw and genuine start of her days on GarageBand and YouTube before playing some of her early hits “Falling for U” and “Cliche.” Fans were super pleased to hear a full selection of music from all eras, including “mona lisa,” and her brand new single, “I hate texas.” The crowd was ready to go for her classic smash song “prom dress,” which gave everyone in the room a release and scream that left us feeling completely fulfilled. We had just had our world rocked and it was nothing short of fun.
mxmtoon will continue her US run with AJR through the summer, ending with a festival in Mexico City. Her new single “I hate texas” will be out everywhere you can find your music on July 25, which can also be pre-saved on most streaming services. Nep will pick back up on a US fall tour later this year with Ricky Montgomery to further support her debut album “Nep’s Storybook.” These two young artists are slowly carving their way into this tough industry, but they’ve already made marks. These creators are not ones to sleep on — so stream their songs, grab those tickets!
