After touring through the US since April, New York City-based indiepop band Daisy The Great gets to end their Ballerina tour in a sold out show in the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on May 21st. The Ballerina tour is a precursor for the upcoming release of the third Daisy The Great record, The Rubber Teeth Talk, coming June 27th.

The duo brought along Ally Evenson, a singer-songwriter from Detroit, as their support act for the evening. She opens the night with a knit hat with ears on her head, moving around the stage in a theatrical and dramatic way, very fitting for the looping and slightly hypnotizing music she makes. The songs off her debut album Blue Super Love, released in November 2024, have a mesmerizing quality to them. When their set is over, the crowd wakes up feeling weirdly melancholic.

The darker vibe of Evenson’s set is the perfect emotional leadup for the headlining Daisy The Great. The intimate venue quickly proves to be the perfect setting for the emotionally vulnerable duo, being very personable with each other as well as the crowd. Mina Walker and Kelley Dugan, the duo behind Daisy The Great, have a lot of stories to tell, and they’re not only doing so through their songs. The soft and introspective songs, covering themes like friendship breakups, insecurities they deal with, being misunderstood, and all of these things are very relatable for everyone, which makes everything just hit that much harder.

Since this is the last night of the Ballerina tour, getting everyone hyped for their upcoming third record, we get to hear a couple of (currently) unreleased songs. “Lemon Seeds” and “Dog” offer a quiet moment where the crowd isn’t singing along as another harmonizing voice. The two singles “Ballerina” and “Mary’s At The Carnival” do get the crowd to sing along, and the women joke about the crowd needing to start their own choir.
In between songs, the women share a lot of personal anecdotes and jokes. The magical harmonies of Kelley’s and Mina’s vocals, and the humorous tone in between songs, balance out the emotional weight perfectly throughout the evening.

You can tell by the way they interact with each other, as well as with the crowd, that they are having the best time. There’s hand holding with the young fans in the front row, stories about a Winnie The Pooh plushie face down in a New York puddle that Kelley said ‘that was me’, and the crowd singing the outro of “Tell Me Have You Been Dancing” back to the band. Everything about this night makes it feel like you’re watching your best friends.

Because of the open and tender attitude the women have, it’s easy for the crowd to respond in kind, everyone’s hearts worn on their sleeves. This is what concerts are meant to be like, what music is supposed to do: finding a place you belong, with likeminded souls, leaving feeling better than you did before. This is where the true power lies for Daisy The Great.
While this was the last show of the Ballerina tour, the New Yorkers tell the crowd they’ll be back in Los Angeles very soon. With the upcoming release of The Rubber Teeth Talk, we’ll not have heard the last of them for the year, so keep an eye out for dates near you soon!
