Elizabeth Harris, professionally known as Cupcakke is an artist based out of Chicago, Illinois, and is known for her hyper-sexualized style of rap that has gained a rather large following since her emergence into the music industry. This is her first tour after a year-long break. Her current BakKery tour stopped at the House of Blue in San Diego, California which was completely sold out. DJ Honey opened up for her and used her mixing skills to get the crowd warmed up for the headlining performance. I think she opened well for the headliner because the crowd was screaming the entire time up until Cupcakke took the stage.
The moment the stage lights dimmed and Cupcakke took the stage the entire venue filled with screams and yells with anticipation of her performance. She began her set with “Ballerina Coupe” and the crowd began shouting lyrics and dancing. The production on stage was pretty simple but the lighting was great and allowed for more flexibility capturing the essence of her performance. I enjoyed getting into the crowd which was pretty packed to get some shots from that vantage point and to get a fan perspective. She had a high energy even in between songs throughout her set which kept the crowd engaged. A main highlight from the show was towards the end when she brought up several people from the crowd to get on stage to dance while she continued her rap which had the crowd really hyped up.
Cupcakke ended her set with her popular “Backstage Passes” track with an encore to wrap up the night. She vocalized to the crowd following her set that it was her second time in San Diego and that she loved the energy. Throughout the night she singled a few people out in the crowd and gave them the mic to engage in a performance which from a fan standpoint was an experience to be had. This was a new type of concert that I covered and I thought it was a great show.
