Cattle Decapitation Parties Like It’s 1349 in Their Hometown of San Diego

Heavy fog filled the night air in San Diego, California and fans were eagerly lining up outside The Observatory in North Park. The death metal/grindcore legends, Cattle Decapitation, were back in their hometown for their headlining No Fear For Tomorrow North American 2025 Tour. For support they brought with them fellow titans of death metal, Aborted, as well as Frozen Soul and Tribal Gaze.

Kicking the show off were newcomers Tribal Gaze. From the first song, it was clear these guys meant business. Calling for the pit to open up immediately, their raw and crushing guitar riffs set the tone for the rest of the night. Playing a majority of songs from their recent release Inveighing Brilliance, Tribal Gaze proved they belonged with the heavy hitters.

Afterwards it was Texas-based Frozen Soul’s turn to take to the stage. Quickly gaining notoriety amongst metal fans, their music incorporates that old school death metal sound. Heavy, crushing guitar riffs and low guttural vocals quickly filled the venue. The band has a commanding onstage presence, especially frontman and vocalist Chad Green. At one point during their set, he shouted at the crowd since there was a wide open gap, to fill it with people and for them to do push ups during the next song. Playing a mix of songs from their albums Crypt of Ice and Glacial Domination, Frozen Soul delivered a crushing performance.

As intense as the show had been so far, it only got more chaotic as Aborted came onstage. Pioneers of their genre, Aborted unleashed a wave of punishing and technical guitar riffs and solos at break neck speeds. Vocalist and sole original member Sven de Caluwé is a spectacle of a frontman onstage, violently headbanging and throwing punches and kicks in the air, while simultaneously delivering ferocious vocals at the same high speeds as the instrumentals. After playing an absolutely chaotic set, they close out their time with blasting the electric dance song “Sandstorm” by Darude, accompanied by a colorful light display. Sven invites to crowd to party with him one last time, and the once hectic mosh pit turns into a dance floor as the crowd jumps along to the song. After a min, Aborted thanks the crowd and make their way offstage, leaving the crowd reinvigorated for the main act.

After the short break, fog machines began to fill the air and the stage lights dimmed. This tour was a celebration of Cattle Decapitation’s self proclaimed magnum opus record, 2019’s Death Atlas, and they were performing it in its entirety. One by one each band member made their way onstage, meanwhile multiple voices could be heard through the loudspeakers in different languages, each offering some kind of warning of impending doom. This signaled the introduction of the record, and then the band immediately launched into the first track, “The Geocide.” The band’s playing is mesmerizing, ferocious, and unrelenting. This is only enhanced by the album’s themes that call for the downfall of humanity and all around armageddon. Vocalist Travis Ryan is a master of his craft, seamlessly weaving low trembling gutturals, face melting goblin-like shrieks, and dare I say, melodic singing. This is especially highlighted during crowd favorite “Bring Back The Plague.”

A little more than halfway through the album play through, there was a sudden halt to the show.  As it turned out, alongside celebrating that this was a hometown show, it was also Travis Ryan’s birthday, and the band set up a surprise for him as his mother came out onstage with a birthday cake. The crowd proceeded to loudly sing Happy Birthday to Travis and he blow out his candles. After a round of hugs from friends and family, he thanked the crowd and made a joking comment about the title of the next song on the track list, “With All Disrespect.” They soon wrapped up the full album play through, concluding with the title track, “Death Atlas,” and stood triumphantly onstage as the crowd cheered on. They finished the nights performance with three more songs, all from their most recent album, Terrasite.

Cattle Decapitation is one of those bands that I’ve found to be universally liked, or at the very least, respected within the extreme metal community. And their live shows are a great representation of that. After just over an hour long of getting pummeled by music filled with pure aggression and doom, the crowd began to disperse, exhausted but exhilarated. Cattle Decapitation sure know how to throw a great birthday party.
