BOYS LIKE GIRLS DELIVER THE SOUNDTRACKS OF OUR LIVES IN TEMPE, ARIZONA

There’s something uniquely powerful about a band that doesn’t just survive the passage of time but learns how to weaponize it. Boys Like Girls did that exactly at the Marquee Theatre on April 29th in Tempe, Arizona. They performed both their self-titled album and Love Drunk album from front to back as a reminder of how proud they are of these bodies of work and how, over time, these became the soundtracks of our lives.

Arrows in Action opened with an intense energy that felt tailor-made for a crowd eager to jump around and headbang. Their set was bright and catchy, dwelling heavily on execution, and it worked. Following them was iDKHOW bringing their theatrical antics and darker alt-pop sound, which sharpened the night’s dynamic. Together, they made a great warm-up for the BLG fans in the theater.

Boys Like Girls hit the stage, and the crowd went from quiet to the loudest fans. Frontman Martin Johnson carried himself with the ease of someone who understands both his legacy and his audience. There was no overcompensation, just a confident walk towards their places because they knew it was going to be one of the best nights for their fans in attendance.

The setlist felt like the first time listening to the album, from front to back without skips. All the tracklists in each album played as if they were just released yesterday. Songs like “Love Drunk” and “Two Is Better Than One” were clear favorites from the Love Drunk album. After the last song, each TV on their stage design had a 10-minute countdown to signal that the next album would be next.

They started the self-titled album with “The Great Escape,” which usually is played as their last song, but the crowd didn’t mind. All the songs from this album were played with each chorus landing with the kind of force that only comes from a crowd that’s lived with these tracks for years. They surprisingly ended the night with the exact same song, “The Great Escape,” again, but this time, no phones were allowed, just pure nostalgia and bursting energy from the crowd, which became obviously the anthem of their fans’ rebellious years.

Martin expressed his gratitude to all of the fans in between songs and shared some of the lore of how he came up and wrote the songs like “Thunder.” Whether people illegally downloaded their songs from Limewire or bought the actual physical album, he’s mentioned that he’s still genuinely grateful because it helped them a lot in propelling their career in the music industry.

Boys Like Girls offered something more grounded but no less impactful: connection. That’s why they called this tour The Soundtrack of Your Life. Their performance at Marquee Theatre wasn’t just about proving relevance; it was also about demonstrating endurance. And in doing so, they made a compelling case that some bands don’t just age well; they evolve in ways that make them hit even harder the second time around.
