The White Buffalo is no stranger to Central Coast music lovers — they were recently returned to Paso Robles at the Barrel House Brewing Co. Fresh off their overseas tour run, The White Buffalo is back on the road here in the states. The small backyard-like venue of Barrel House Brewing Co. is home of ‘Good People Good Times Great Beer’ — and on this Saturday, it was set for all three of those to ring true along to the tunes of The White Buffalo and Michael Peters.
Coming in from the valley with that Bakersfield country sound, Michael Peters opened the night’s performance with an acoustic set. The “Buzzard Food” singer played a few originals (Michael Peters & The Monsters) telling the crowd he and the rest of the band are set to return to the area next week. Of course, being from Bakersfield and playing country music, we were bound to hear him cover a few songs by Merle Haggard — the legend to come out of Bakersfield. If you’re a fan of traditional country music, this guy may be in your wheelhouse of options to check out.

As good times continue to roll on, the main act’s time has come. The White Buffalo is a three-piece band that packs a punch and full of energy. Now, I have seen this band many times — first back in 2015 — and every time they come out swinging with the fast power track, but tonight was completely different. Jake walked out alone with his guitar onto the stage to the mic to perform “Wish It Was True” — a slow, but powerful vocal song. Witnessing The White Buffalo start the show like this was truly a sight. It really captured the attention of everyone in the moment to just stop and focus on him.

Then, Jake went into the next song called “Love Song #1.” For those who don’t know the song, it starts off slow with acoustics then the band joins in about halfway and builds it up further. Once things picked up and got fast paced, the crowd became alive again. The drinks on and off the stage continued to flow throughout the night. Hits such as “Set My Body Free,” “One Lone Night,” and “This Year” were performed before the crowd got a cover of “House of The Rising Sun” by The Animals. There have been so many bands who’ve covered this track — in my opinion, nothing will be as good as the original — but, The White Buffalo’s version could be one of the best ones out there. A track titled “C’mon Come Up Come Out” off their latest album also made it onto the set list. They played another fan favorite called “The Whistler” — one of many tracks that made it onto the hit tv series Sons of Anarchy. Another crowd pleaser toward the end of the setlist was a song that was written for the show Come Join the Murder. Naturally, the show couldn’t end until “The Pilot” was played — always an energetic send off for everyone.

For their encore, The White Buffalo came back out to play three more songs: the first being a cover of “Highwayman” by the legendary band with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash. I’ll leave the last two songs as a surprise for yourself to go check out as there as still tour date left for a chance to see a show before the year is over. All in all, this was another great set. Seeing this band will definitely be one to remember for all to come.
