Most know Ashton Irwin as the drummer of internationally renowned band 5 Seconds of Summer — wildly successful through their 20s, the four were all still in their teens when they first formed. Fast forward through the past decade of worldwide domination with almost 1,000 concerts, 26 singles, 5 studio albums and so much more — the guys have finally gotten time to breathe and pursue their own individual projects in the more recent years.
Ashton’s latest release, BLOOD ON THE DRUMS, follows his 2020 solo debut release of Superbloom. Primarily written and produced by John Feldmann (amongst many other talented songwriters), BLOOD ON THE DRUMS delivers an eclectic blend of sounds that appeals to listeners across the board from 5SOS fans as well as a new-coming audience. With a generous track listing split across two discs, nostalgic notes of upbeat pop/rock flow perfectly through the first disc, accompanied by those punchy, signature drums that Ashton is so well known for. Disc 2 feels a smidge toned down, with stronger acoustics and subtle elements of classic Laurel Canyon sounds, reminiscent of the 60s and 70s. Combined, both parts of this record satisfy every corner of our listening pallet — with the balanced ability to relax the mind and energize the soul, Ashton’s latest gifts to the world really do offer a genuine listening experience.
In celebration of BLOOD ON THE DRUMS, fans and friends flooded The Belasco in downtown LA for the album’s release show. Ashton’s artistry and talent oozed as he swapped between vocals, guitar and drums effortlessly nailing every moment throughout his performance. The powerhouse energy could be felt radiating with each song — as well as the pure joy emitted from smiles shared between Ashton and an infectiously supportive audience. There was something special about feeling the love so strongly that night and witnessing the debut of a long-awaited album. While some may view Ashton as highly successful already (with 5SOS), there is something special about achieving personal endeavors that may have seemed out of reach at one point or another. It brings me joy to see anyone so victorious in the music realm able to conquer a solo project and still maintain a balance with such an accomplished group of bandmates.
About a month ago, Ashton was a guest with us on The Allison Hagendorf Show, where he discussed all things music, life and in between. All of us on set were thrilled for Ashton’s next chapter with BLOOD ON THE DRUMS, so watching the album release unfold followed by a beautiful night at The Belasco was extremely merited. Aside from being a brilliant artist, Ashton graced us with his presence as delightfully authentic human being. We are over the moon for everything that he has achieved both past and present and wish nothing but the absolute best for everything that the future has in store.
