Amyl and the Sniffers kicked up the volume at San Diego’s coolest, new venue The Sound on August 13, 2024. The Australian punk rock extraordinaires were joined by Lambrini Girls, an all female trio force of self proclaimed “righteous queer fury.” This stellar roster made for an evening of women empowerment, raw music and some insanely sick punk rock. The scene of San Diego showed up and ready to rage.
As Lambrini Girls took the stage for their San Diego debut, they immediately exploded into a vulnerable, true authentic blast that undoubtedly awakened the entire surrounding neighborhood of Del Mar. Their “in-your-face” attitude paired with raw commentary were a perfect storm for punk authenticity. Frontwoman Phoebe Lunny owned the stage and beyond, as she went into the crowd multiple times to join the circle pits and connect with fans. Lunny and bassist/backup vocalist Lilly Macieira performed with a certain charm that brought the serious, uncompromisable political activism with appropriate points of comedic relief that truly allowed the audience to resonate with their important message. Accompanied with insane guitar riffs, intricate drumming, vocal charm, and a most-pit perfect sound, the blend truly gave an authentic perspective.
The crowd was eager and ready when Amyl and the Sniffers took the stage. The room erupted as the band launched into their intro song “Balaclava Lover Boogie” and immediately followed with “Freaks to the Front.” Frontwoman Amy Taylor absolutely crushed in the department of stage presence, skipping around the stage, showing comedic flair with her audience interaction, even at one point just stopping and giving the audience some pushups in the name of punk rock. The raw, feral vibe gave a breath of fresh air in an era of polished recorded music and auto-tuned vocals. Amyl and the Sniffers’ performance was unapologetic, unfiltered and most notably inclusive, another rarity in the punk scene.
Although Amyl and the Sniffers have concluded their USA run, they will pick back up all across Europe this fall. Be sure to follow them as they announce shows for next year as you do NOT want to miss the last living notes of pure authentic grit in music that is Amyl and the Sniffers.
