Houston’s elder emos gathered at Bayou Music Center on Thursday, October 15, for a sold-out night with Sleeping With Sirens, Rain City Drive, and Shyeye. As an elder emo myself, I knew this was going to be a good one. I’ve covered plenty of shows at Bayou Music Center, but this was easily one of the most packed crowds I’ve seen at the venue, and the photos speak for themselves. Although I only caught the final moments of Shyeye’s opening set, their performance was intense and left quite an impression. With the venue packed and the crowd ready for a night of music, it was clear Houston had shown up for this lineup.

Next up was Rain City Drive, a Florida-based alternative rock band known for mixing post-hardcore influences with catchy melodies and powerful vocals. This was my first time hearing or seeing them live, so I went into their set with no expectations, just curiosity about a band my best friend absolutely adores. They kicked things off with “Frozen,” followed by “Concrete Closure,” and by that point, I was already hooked. Their energy was top-notch from the very beginning, and it didn’t take long for me to understand why they were chosen to join Sleeping With Sirens on this tour. Frontman Matt McAndrew was constantly pacing back and forth across the stage, smiling at the crowd and keeping everyone engaged throughout the performance. The entire band had great stage presence and even made an effort to interact with the photographers in the pit, which is always something I appreciate. They kept that energy going throughout their set, performing songs including their newest single, “Slither,” along with “Wish You the Best,” “Waiting on You,” and “Blood Runs Cold.” They closed things out with “Medicate Me,” ending an already impressive performance on a high note. Overall, I walked away extremely impressed, and it’s safe to say I finally understand the hype surrounding Rain City Drive.

And then came the moment everyone had been waiting for, Sleeping With Sirens. The excitement throughout Bayou Music Center was impossible to miss, especially seeing younger fans lined up along the barricade, eagerly waiting for the band to take the stage. It was also incredible seeing so many familiar faces from Houston’s emo community gathered in one place. In a way, the night felt like a reunion, which made the experience even more memorable. The second Sleeping With Sirens stepped onstage, it was pure bliss. Between the lighting, visuals, stage production, and nonstop energy, everything you would expect from this band was there, multiplied by a thousand. These guys seriously never age. They still have that same youthful energy, and hearing how incredible they sound live after all these years was something else.

The band made sure to show Houston plenty of love throughout the night, even mentioning how much fun they had been having on the Texas dates of the tour. Clearly, Texans still have a whole lot of love for Sleeping With Sirens, and the sold-out crowd made that obvious. Their setlist was packed with fan favorites, including “Leave It All Behind,” “A Trophy Father’s Trophy Son,” “Better Off Dead,” and “Bloody Knuckles.” They also performed their recently rerecorded single, “I’m Coming Home (Big Gulps),” a song that dates back to the band’s earliest days in 2009.

Every song brought another wave of excitement, and I couldn’t have been happier hearing so many familiar favorites live. They wrapped up the night with two incredible encore performances, “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn” and “If You Can’t Hang.” While I was a little sad not getting to hear “Complete Collapse,” there was no denying how impressive the setlist was from beginning to end… and you know I jammed that song on the way home anyways.

Overall, the entire night was an absolute blast. Between reconnecting with friends, watching multiple generations of fans come together, and seeing Sleeping With Sirens continue to thrive, it was one of those shows that reminded me why I love live music so much. There’s something special about watching a band that’s been part of the scene for so long still deliver a performance with that much passion and energy. Sleeping With Sirens proved once again that they haven’t lost a bit of what made fans fall in love with them in the first place. With more performances planned beyond this tour, fans will have more opportunities to experience that same energy live. Houston showed up for them, and they gave that love right back.
