You probably couldn’t have found a better way to spend “Purple Friday”-night in Amsterdam, than at the second Chrissy Chlapecka show in the newly opened Melkweg ANN. After a run through the UK and the rest of mainland Europe, the rising bubblegum-pop star finally found her way to play two sold-out shows in Amsterdam, in honor of her June record release called Christine: High Voltage.

The Melkweg ANN opened this week, as part nightclub, part concert venue for the sexiest upcoming acts, so the club’s opening and Chrissy’s shows are the perfect pair. The pink nightclub and pink songstress are a match made in heaven. If the pre-show playlist is any indication, we’re getting treated to the campiest pop this Friday night, listening to the likes of Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and, surprisingly popular among the crowd, Avril Lavigne. The show officially starts with Chlapecka’s drag mother Ramona Slick treating the crowd to a draglesque performance with a thousand cheeky and risqué reveals.

This “Girl on the Moon” UK/EU tour is filled with extraterrestrial theatrics, Chrissy herself coming up on stage as the Phantom of the Opera in a cloak; she announced beforehand the theme and dress-code of these nights would be tied to this musical. A lot of fans are also dressed up to the theme, handing the artists a rose at some point during the set.

When she sings the song “Christine,” I almost feel like she’s singing especially to me, but even when it’s not your name, Chrissy makes sure everyone in the audience feels her love throughout the night. The singer makes a lot of effort to connect to her fans, and the good vibes are felt from front to back. Her stage presence reminds of the early days of artists like Lady Gaga, Chlapecka’s love for the theatrical very noticeable in every aspect of her act. She painted her face blue, added brain-braids for the first song of the night (conveniently called “Brain”), and wears multiple glittery bodysuits (with an outfit change at the halfway point).

While she is American, her music is so Euro-pop, of course she finds herself in two sold out shows in the center of Amsterdam (the second only had a handful of tickets left for sale, but the venue was so packed you wouldn’t be able to tell). She mentions she wasn’t sure if she should play the country-adjacent glam rock song “Clam Casino,” but we’re so glad she did, as it turns into the biggest party of the night as well. Chrissy also brought along two dancers, doing extensive choreographed dances all set (and one of them doing double duty at guitar on select songs as well). The true highlights of the night are found in the slower songs like “Girl on the Moon,” where her strong vocals get a chance to really shine. Unfortunately, due to Chrissy recovering from being sick, she had to cut the emotional ballad “The One Who Gets To Cry” and “Cherry Do You Love Me” on the second night. If this isn’t even her at 100% right now, we’re very excited to find out what she is capable of at full power.

After closing the show with her first single “I’m So Hot,” the artist takes a moment to express how much fun she had during these two nights. Her jumping with joy after the last notes is simply so endearing you can’t help but feel enthralled by her. Back in 2009, Lady Gaga performed at the Melkweg right before she broke into the world, and after witnessing this show, a similar trajectory for Chrissy wouldn’t be all that surprising either. You can find out if this is an exaggeration or not soon enough, as Chrissy Chlapecka will continue with her “Girl on the Moon” tour in the United States in November, with tickets to most shows available through https://www.chrissychlapecka.com/shows-1.
