Every great journey begins with the decision to leave something behind. For Midnight Generation, this is embodied through their latest single, “Runaways,” which captures the thrill of chasing the unknown, as the band prepares to take that journey from the studio to stages around the world on an ambitious global tour. It’s a pivotal moment, one defined as much by possibility as by the momentum of creativity and movement. Having transformed their joyous, disco/funk/synth-pop sound into an international calling card, Midnight Generation now finds themselves pushing beyond the boundaries that first brought them together.

Following their performance on the Grove Stage at New York City’s Governors Ball last month, First III No Flash caught up with Midnight Generation to talk the release of their shiny new single, “Runaways,” the world they’ve built for themselves, and how the best journeys begin when you’re willing to leave the familiar behind.
With “Runaways,” the Mexican-born indie-electro quintet dances confidently into its next era, soundtracking a year that’s already taken the band onto festival stages around the world. Fans seeing Midnight Generation perform live for the first time are experiencing a dancefloor-like atmosphere, where infectious grooves are paired with cinematic synths and melodies that linger long after the beat fades. When it comes to their performances, the band explains:
“In the end, we come in to set the tone [and] we try to bring our style. [We bring] a show where people can have a good time and enjoy themselves. The rest we leave up to them.”
Despite the growing crowds, Midnight Generation’s philosophy is simple: create the atmosphere, then let the audience make it their own. Every performance is built around that idea, as they invite fans to dance, lose themselves for the duration of their set, and take away whatever resonates most once they take their final bow.

For Midnight Generation, “Runaways” has already taken on a life of its own. What began as another track in the studio has evolved into one of the band’s most joyous live moments, with festival crowds embracing its irresistible groove before they’ve even had the chance to stream it:
“We didn’t think the song was going to blow up the way it has when playing it live.”
Show after show, they’ve watched audiences lock into its pulse as it has become a highlight of their set. That immediate connection wasn’t entirely unexpected, though. The first hint came online, where snippets of “Runaways” where shared on social media by the band ahead of its release. The response was instant, giving the band confidence that they had stumbled onto something bigger than another album track. By the time they brought it to festival stages, the momentum was already building.
“Runaways” marks the beginning of Midnight Generation’s next chapter while leaning further into the disco-futuristic sound it’s steadily made its own. Anchored by a self-described “rubbery bass loop and shimmering synths,” the track draws inspiration from French touch house while channeling the band’s melodic sensibilities. The accompanying video expands on that same vision as the band embraces its retro-futurist aesthetic and reminds us all it’s “time to dance!” The new track is a confident leap forward from a group expanding its creative horizons without losing sight of the groove that brought them here.
The song represents where the band is at creatively as it embodies “that transition of wanting to reach new audiences and expose [their] sound internationally.” That sense of movement and growth isn’t just woven into the lyrics, but has become part of Midnight Generation’s identity. When asked to sum up “Runaways” in just a few words, their answer is telling: “tour life, high energy, to be runaways!” The song mirrors the band’s current reality, one fueled by constant travel, packed festival crowds, and a growing international fanbase discovering their retro-futurist blend of disco, funk, and synth-pop in real-time.
Timing couldn’t be more fitting, as “Runaways” marks Midnight Generation’s first release through Sony. This ushers in a new chapter for the band as they continue expanding beyond their home base and into an increasingly global audience. More than just a standalone single, the track serves as the opening statement for what’s to come for them, setting the tone for their next album while ensuring its sights are firmly set on the horizon.
Midnight Generation has carved their own path where funk grooves, disco rhythms, scintillating synth-pop, and sleek electronic production collide. Following their 2025 breakthrough and their rapid evolution in contemporary Mexican music, Fernando Mares (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Luis Carlos “Bica” Valderrama (keyboards, backing vocals), Carlos Amaya (bass, keyboards), Samuel Márquez (drums, backing vocals), and Diego Bustillos (percussion), have created a unique sound that is equal parts nostalgic and forward-looking. Their sound pays homage to the futuristic sheen of Daft Punk while channeling the timeless pulse of the dance music that came before.
“Runaways” carries that momentum forward, serving not just as the band’s latest release but as a clear direction toward its next creative chapter. Midnight Generation’s recent festival run has introduced them to thousands of new listeners, many arriving with little familiarity but most importantly, leaving as fans. Judging by the reaction to “Runaways,” the band’s retro-futurist universe is only growing daily, and they’re inviting everyone along for the ride. Be sure not to miss Midnight Generation (“No Excuse! Time to Dance!”) on the remainder of their international WORLD TOUR 2026, spanning North America, Europe, Mexico, and South America, as well as on their headline dates across Europe and Latin America.
