God Forbid LØLØ Thoroughly Enjoys Herself in Amsterdam

The sensitive pop-punk princess LØLØ released her sophomore album god forbid a girl spits out her feelings! on April 17, and in honor of this record, immediately went on tour through Europe and UK for her ‘god forbid a girl goes on tour’ tour. After a week of shows through central Europe, she made her way to Amsterdam on May 4th. The princess doesn’t have to go at it all by herself, since she brought two royal support acts with her, starting with Sydney Sherill.

Sydney Sherill (Christine Mooijer)

The Texas born (and now New York based) vocalist Sydney Sherill released her first EP Live Me Down in February of this year, already making quite an impression in just a couple of months time. Her emotional country rock reminds of artists like Sheryl Crow, of which she covers “If It Makes You Happy” during her short set tonight as well. This cover really suits her vibe so well, it could easily be mistaken to be her own song. Dressed in cowboy boots and a short pink silk dress, she takes all the attention, even with a full band on stage with her. Her lyrics do have quite the bite to them, with a bold bass sound in songs like “God Bless LES,” but she’s also not afraid to end her set with the more emotional “If I Can Last.” The young artist has easily gained a couple of fans in her early set tonight, but she has to note she can’t meet them until after LØLØ’s set is over, as she has finals to attend to after getting off stage. This clearly is just the beginning for Sydney, but what a start it is.

Ella Red (Christine Mooijer)

For the second act of this Monday night, looks are equally deceiving. Stepping up on stage as a ballerina, with just a bad-ass drummer behind her, she immediately sets the tone for her set. If Sydney’s set was Coyote UglyElla Red embodies Promising Young Woman. The female rage in “He Asked For It” is followed by “Aphrodite,” a haunting song about struggling with self-love. This is met by a cute fan project, with fans holding up signs saying “we hear your plea.” Ella Red released her scathing full-length debut IT’S NOT REAL in January, and has already gained quite the following. She expresses gratitude for her first ever fan project in Europe, started by a fan she clearly already knew from earlier shows, and tries to say something in Dutch to connect with more of us in the process.

All the songs she performs are about her experiences as a woman and the emotions that go with it, which is why the music tonight is so deeply relatable for 80% of the crowd as well. All of this helps break the crowd free of restrictions and gets everyone jumping along in no time. She also would love us to know she made all her tour outfits herself. The pinks in her dress and hair heavily contrasts the sharp and moody music she plays. After Ella exits the stage, she leaves it to her drummer Wren for a killer drum solo to wrap it up.

LØLØ (Christine Mooijer)

LØLØ’s storyline starts with her narrating a conversation of her journal with her robot. This theatrical story is woven throughout the show, starting with sending messages to a man, leading to frustration he’s not responding and eventually receiving a naughty picture (leading into the song “me with no shirt on”). Her songs are forming a coherent story through these stylistic choices that make sense for her act, enhanced by the different era’s she’s already gone through. Now in her “princess and the pea” era, she also featured her Wizard of Oz era as a show segment, introduced through an instrumental version of “Over the Rainbow.”

Over the last couple of years, LØLØ has been to Europe a handful of times. Having seen her set every year since 2023, it’s clear to see how much she’s matured into her stage presence. While her show in Haarlem in November 2024 was a little awkward at times, still figuring it out along the way, she really grew into her role as a bona fide rock star. This is noticeable in how she moves around the stage, interacts with her band, and it shines through in the show/set design. She doesn’t reject what she did before, still featuring a robot in the corner and pulling a cheerleader fan on stage during “debbie downer,” but all of it feels so much more intentional. It’s all very fitting with her dramatic and unfiltered nature. This feeling is enhanced by the curtains framing the backdrop, making the show feel like a musical set, fully embracing the drama.

LØLØ (Christine Mooijer)

Throughout the show, LØLØ is very personable with her fans. She’s not one to mince her words in her music nor her on-stage talks, yapping about everything between spacecake (the true Amsterdam experience every artist actually goes to the city for), pissing herself on stage and her love for Bagels & Beans. While it’s a little unhinged and ‘TMI’ at times, she also gets real and vulnerable right after. She tells her fans that she used to feel ashamed of feeling so much, getting over most of her insecurities when she saw so many of us feel so affected by her songs. That’s the real force behind her act, because behind the theatrical entertainer is a woman singing about things we all go through, the fans connecting to her lyrical relatable stories.

After a couple more interactive moments, like the very loud fan choice for “hurt less” over “lonely & pathetic,” and Ella Red joining her on “delusional darling,” it’s time for an encore in true theatrical fashion. LØLØ comes back on stage in a “lousy T-shirt” that’ll be for sale after the show, starting the encore with a stripped back, acoustic and emotional “wish i was a robot” before going all out with a strong and loud rendition of “hot girls in hell.” During the show, she remembers opening a show in this venue in 2023, and wishing to get the chance to headline it in the future. With this wish coming true tonight, if she keeps growing into her craft the way she’s done over the last 3 years, there’s no question she’ll fill out the bigger MAX (across the hall) in no time, too.

LØLØ’s tour continues to the UK from May 7th until 13th, with tickets to these shows running out soon. Don’t miss out and get your tickets as soon as possible through https://www.itslolomusic.com/#tour.
