Running to Nostalgia with Aly & AJ in Winston-Salem

Best known for their early success on The Disney Channel, Aly & AJ have made it clear that they are not those same child performers anymore. On the night of March 7th, the sister duo filled the intimate venue of the Ramkat with melancholy tones and a sense of sentimentality.

The American duo consisting of sisters Alyson “Aly” Michalka and Amanda Joy “AJ” Michalka released their debut album, Into the Rush, in 2005. Now, over 20 years later, the two have rounded out their discography with their sixth studio album, Silver Deliverer. This album leads the majority of songs on their setlist, marking a clear departure from their childhood identity and shifting toward a more mature sound.

Hayden Blount (Alycee Byrd)

Opener Hayden Blount started the night with a curated collection of wistful country ballads. Despite some smashed fingers from the nights before, this solo singer and guitarist set the tone for an evening of dreamy tunes.

Entering the stage through ethereal dream-like lights and donning western embellished shirts and boots, Aly & AJ opened their set with their title track, “Silver Deliverer.” This Winston-Salem show was a treat for local fans. The small standing-room-only venue created a wonderfully cozy ambience. On top of that, this was the group’s first time performing in this city, which ended up being the perfect transition into their song “Places To Run.” The duo mentioned that sometimes, while touring, they feel as if they’d performed almost everywhere, but being in a new city proved that there are still so many places to run to.

The setlist was driven by warm guitar riffs and blended harmonies. The songs carry a modern country and Americana influence, full of wanderlust and self-reflective lyrics, which is a clear switch from their original pop-rock sound. Nevertheless, OG fans were not forgotten as nostalgic hits like “Chemical Reacts” and “Rush” stirred up the crowd. Even with their differing sound, it is clear that Aly & AJ still have a strong fan base after all these years. There was a sense of romanticism in the air, as nostalgic fans who once grew up watching Aly & AJ on TV are now marveling at seeing them live.

Swaying heads, cuddling couples, and songs that make you feel a sense of calm, this show created the perfect atmosphere for yearning souls. If you’re looking for a delightful night, be sure to check out a live show on this U.S.-based tour.
