Return of the Riffs: Galactic Empire Live at Terminal West in Atlanta

A Long Time Ago… At a Concert Far, Far Away…

Galactic Empire brought their perfect blend of heavy metal ferocity, theatrical spectacle, and pure nerd culture to Terminal West in Atlanta, GA. It was a night filled with lightsabers and heavy metal riffs that gave a new spin to some of the music I grew up with—music that helped shape who I am today. I have a feeling that when John Williams wrote the intro to A New Hope so many years ago, he had no idea it would one day be reimagined with growling bass riffs, screeching guitars, and pounding drums.

The band walked onstage like Darth Vader invading a Corellian Corvette. The stage was flooded with glowing red lights and smoke as if a battle were about to begin. Dressed as members of the dreaded Galactic Empire, they immediately launched into their version of the “20th Century Fox Fanfare,” and the crowd instantly knew what was coming next. The inner child—and nerd—in me felt chills as they played the “Star Wars: Main Title,” followed by “The Imperial March.” But it wasn’t just themes from Star Wars that made the night great. They tore into themes from SupermanHalloweenHarry Potter, and several others, all with precision and energy.

It was a night that allowed me to feel like a kid again. Memories of seeing Return of the Jedi in the theater rushed back into my mind. It was the perfect blend of hardcore rock and the movies that will always hold a special place in my heart. They may be named after the villains of some of the greatest films of all time, but the Force was most definitely strong with the Galactic Empire.

“The Force will be with you… always.”
