LANDMVRKS Make Their Mark on Calgary

Hailing from Marseille, France, metalcore band LANDMVRKS made their first ever stop in Calgary on Friday night. The stacked tour saw fellow French metal band Resolve kick off the night with heavy riffs and rowdy mosh pits, followed by Atlanta based Silly Goose adding their nu-metal energy.

Novelists, another French metalcore group, saw crowdsurfers flying to their catchy instrumentals and screams. They even had members of LANDMVRKS join them on stage early to perform their popular collaboration, “Heretic.” Despite the crowd’s insane energy for the opening bands, they still had a lot to give for headliners LANDMVRKS.

Comprised of lead vocalist Florent Salfati, lead guitarist Nicolas Exposito, rhythm guitarist Paul Cordebard, bassist Rudy Purkart, and drummer Kévin D’Agostino, the heavy quintet started their set off with a bang through “Creature” and “Death.” The crowdsurfers and mosh pit carried on from the first song through the last, lit by bright red and blue lights throughout. There were still a few calm moments to catch one’s breath, however. Partway through the show, all band members left the stage and an easel with a blank canvas appeared, which Salfati used to spray paint an art piece in front of an amazed audience (fun fact: you can purchase his graffiti pieces here). Later on, Salfati performed an acoustic rendition of their hit song “Suffocate” before the rest of the band joined in to finish it.

The explosive encore consisted of “Blood Red,” “Requiem,” and “Self-Made Black Hole,” the final song being performed with vocalist Anthony Diliberto from Resolve. The night ended on a high note as the band expressed their appreciation to the crowd before departing the stage. Despite their latest album being titled The Darkest Place I’ve Ever Been, a LANDMVRKS show is a bright and fun place to be.
