VOILÀ Casts a Spell on Amsterdam During Their ‘Magic Word’ Tour

After touring Europe late last year, the Los Angeles based band VOILÀ can’t seem to get enough of the continent, as they’ve already made their way back this month for their The Magic Word Tour. The duo is accompanied by Dutch Melrose and Chri$tian Gate$ as support this time, making for a night filled with songs about heartbreak and romance.

Dutch Melrose (Christine Mooijer)

Dutch Melrose has the honor to start the evening with his cinematic and vampiric dark romance vibes. His guitarist’s Von Dutch shirt (accidentally?) links to Addison Rae’s song with Charli XCX, performing in the room opposite the OZ tonight. The fans on this side of the venue all know a lot of the words of the songs by the opening acts, with a lot of them waiting patiently for the song “RUNRUNRUN.” With Dutch Melrose stating he forgot to print the setlist and joking about the song most seem to know, he interacts with the crowd a lot, making the evening already feeling very personal from the get-go.

Chri$tian Gate$ (Christine Mooijer)

Chri$tian Gate$ continues with the same energy, following Dutch Melrose very quickly as both supports use the same drum kit. Christian’s dark and heartbreaking vibe feels cathartic, as singing about our wounds together, makes everyone feel bonded through music. The blonde alt-pop artist sits on the edge of the stage with the fans in front row a couple of times, as the fans are right against the low stage in this venue as well, so the connection with them is easily made. He makes his way through the venue at the end of the set, connecting with all the fans singing along all over the floor. Dutch Melrose also makes his way back to the stage for their shared song “TOXIC,” and the collaborations between the three bands make a lot of sense for all of them.

The hat-trick of tonight is completed with our main act VOILÀ. With every show on this tour firmly sold out, the duo gets to make every evening a little more magical with their loving ‘Magicians.’ The band handed out bunny ears to the fans before the show, making the entire floor light up with them all through the night. One lucky fan is called up on stage for another magic trick, a clever way to announce their ‘surprise’ song every evening, making it a magnetic celebration for band and fans alike. Tonight’s song is “Dancing On Our Graves,” a song they haven’t played live a lot, so they need the crowd to sing along as loudly as they can. The crowd doesn’t need to be told twice, as they sing along with every word all night long.

The crowd’s dedication shows all evening, never letting their attention slip for even a moment during the long setlist of over 20 songs. VOILÀ’s set is broken up in four different acts, every new act just as magical as the last. The band’s aesthetic is heavily inspired by old movies and magic shows, with the stage featuring starry backlights, two candelabra mic stands and an equally styled old telephone, all adding to the romantic style they’re known for. Guitarist Luke Eisner dressed up in a glittery jacket, wind blowing through his hair reminding of Dutch magician Hans Klok, proving the fanbase name of the ‘Magicians’ just makes sense. The backwards cap and sleeveless shirt on vocalist Gus Ross are a little off theme, but he more than makes up for it in his vocal performance, reaching all notes with ease, even with both men moving around the stage non-stop.

For such a long setlist, it sure felt like no time passed at all when we reach the end with fan-favorite “Figure You Out.” There’s beach balls, bunny ears, smoke steamers on both ends of the stage for extra dramatics, a phone-lit ballad around the end of the evening to catch our breath a little, and another collab song, as Christian Gates joins VOILÀ for their song “After (h)ours”. The synergy between the three bands makes the night all that more cohesive, proving that a well-picked support can elevate a show so much more, aiming higher than just one band could’ve reached by themselves (although granted they reach pretty high anyway). All of these ‘magic tricks’ kept the night exciting from the first minute until the last.

VOILÀ only has one European left to go in Berlin on Monday, before they continue on their US leg of the tour in October. Most of the shows on that leg have also sold out, with very limited tickets available on some of the later dates.
