World’s First Cinema Celebrates ‘Something Of Wonder’ at Album Release Show in LA

World’s First Cinema, the genre-blurring duo of Fil Thorpe and John Sinclair, have always aimed to make music that evokes the grandeur of the silver screen. Their debut full-length album, Something of Wonder, dropped on July 11 via Fearless Records. The pair is celebrated for blending cinematic orchestration with alt-rock, power-pop, and sweeping arrangements that trigger that “main character” energy that listeners crave.

The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles hosted the album release show for Something of Wonder — and it couldn’t have been more fitting. This charming venue in the Arts District of LA was packed wall-to-wall with family and friends, creating an intimate yet jubilant atmosphere that underscored how special this record is to John and Fil.

Though for this night, the stage was more than just John and Fil. Additional live band members accompanied them onstage. From the lush layers of strings to drums with rhythms ranging from delicate brushwork to thunderous drives, these instrumentalists helped bring to life the complexity and intricate sound of Something of Wonder live. This expanded ensemble breathed life into each track — think Hollywood movie score meets rock concert. Their overall composition, brimming with strings, bold rhythms, and orchestral swells, felt like stepping into one of John’s scoring sessions, but amplified by Fil’s rock-infused energy. From the elegance of “Hold My Own” to the haunting theatrics of “Paranoid,” the duo’s widescreen ambition found perfect life on stage at The Moroccan Lounge.

In a room flooded with support, every invoking note was felt collectively by the entire room. The lighting palette was gleaming with rich ambers, deep blues, and flickers of fiery red. Setting the scene visually, they effortlessly complimented the big screen beats of World’s First Cinema, making soft ballads glow and their more powerful moments shimmer. At times, the lights pulled back to a single spotlight, highlighting the intimacy of the moment before exploding again into cinematic bliss. The room was overflowing with pride and joy as the show came to an end — the audience beaming from ear to ear just as much as John himself as he thanked everyone for showing up for this very special moment.
