Chicago Gets Down on Friday with Rebecca Black

I’m sorry, the headline was right there for the taking… but don’t let that distract you from the wonderful artist that Rebecca Black has blossomed into. Rebecca Black’s The Salvation Tour made its stop in one of Chicago’s newest venues, The Outset, located on the northwest side of Chicago on Friday, April 4th.

Rebecca, I feel is often referenced to as “Oh, that one girl who sang Friday?” — which needs to be put to rest, although she embraces her past and I love her for that. Since that release Rebecca has released several EP’s and 2 studio albums and has been making her way up the chain opening for artists such as BlackPink and Sabrina Carpenter. Touring for her most recent album release, Salvation, recently released at the end of February 2025, Rebecca set off for 19 stop Europe and US tour. Along with her tour, Rebecca Black will also be the opening act in 20 cities for Katy Perry’s The Lifetimes Tour. Needless to say, Rebecca Black has been showing off the true artist she is while embracing her past.

Opening for Rebecca was Blue Hawaii, an electronic music duo out of Canada to help get the crowd warmed up. Rebecca then took the stage with her “I’m Rebecca” shirt as if people could forget the woman and singer she has become. Coming out to a Friday-remix, fittingly on a Friday, Rebecca put on a 15 song set list featuring all her songs off Salvation, along with hits off of Let Her Burn and other various hits. Rebecca commanded the stage from beginning to end which featured three different outfit changes and a futuristic lighting experience that flowed right into her electro-pop style.

As Rebecca Black has grown her voice has matured to a bright and clear tone, with a youthful and elegant quality. She now has strong vocal control and can shift between soft, emotional delivery and bold, stylized performances. In her recent music, she often experiments with vocal effects like autotune or distortion, embracing a more artistic, electro-pop, alt-pop sound and style. Themes in her music now center around identity, self-empowerment, and transformation, and she embraces a queer, edgy, and futuristic aesthetic and draws a large LGBTQ following to her shows.

Needless to say Rebecca has evolved to a bona-fide artist that has been spreading like wildfire. Be sure to catch her on one of her remaining Salvation tour dates or catch her opening for Katy Perry this year, here.
